Technology Use

Computer / Technology and Internet Use Agreement

It Is The Responsibility Of All Students/Staff To Avoid Inappropriate Materials.

Access to computers/technology and the Internet MUST support the educational goals of West Mesa high School.  Violation of the ethical and legal use of the school’s computer/technology and Internet will terminate the student’s/staff’s access to all computers in accordance to the consequences policy in place.

Prohibited activities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Accessing any site designed to circumvent any regulated site or link
  • Downloading any executable software, including freeware and shareware, without the direct supervision and/or approval of a teacher, administrator, or Tech Department personnel
  • Illegal activities such as transmission of any material in violation of U.S. or N.M. regulations
  • Commercial activities
  • Playing games, downloading, printing, or scanning of non-teacher approved materials
  • Any anti-social behaviors including, but not limited to, sexually explicit material, hate mail, excessive violence, harassment, bullying, obscenity….
  • Seeking information on files, obtaining copies of files, modifying files, data, and passwords belonging to other users, or gaining unauthorized access to systems
  • Improper use of FERPA or HIPAA qualifying information (staff)
  • Sharing/giving or selling an internet account, or login
  • Unapproved chat lines, list serves, blogs, and/or bulletin boards
  • Vandalism in any form (intentional or not)/Damage as the result of food, drink, gum, candy, makeup, thumb drives, Ipods…….
  • Electronic mail is not guaranteed to be private. System managers in charge have the right to access all accounts, including mail. Messages relating to or in support of illegal or improper activities will be reported to the proper authorities (school administration, district personnel and/or law enforcement.)

Consequences for violation of above policy: (these are cumulative over a student’s/staff’s tenure at WMHS)

1st offense: Meeting with teacher/librarian/administrator and technology department to review what constitutes appropriate/inappropriate use.  Referral to student’s/staff’s file

2nd offense: Meeting with teacher/librarian/administrator and technology department following which will be a suspension of the use of computer/technology and Internet school-wide for 1 week. Referral to student’s/staff’s file, and district office.

3rd offense: Meeting with teacher/librarian/administrator and technology department following which will be the suspension for the remainder of the semester of the use of computer/technology and Internet school-wide. Referral to student’s/staff’s file and district office.

4th offense: Meeting with teacher/librarian/administrator and technology department following which will be the suspension for the remainder of the student’s/staff’s time at West Mesa of the use of computer/technology and Internet school-wide. Referral to student’s/staff’s file and district office

Electronic Devices

Electronic devices (audio players, cell phones, laser pointers, electronic cigarettes, etc.)  These devices interfere with the instructional day and will not be allowed in the classrooms.  These items may be confiscated by staff members and turned in to the administration office.  Electronic cigarettes will be handled per district policy. Confiscated items may be picked up ONLY on THURSDAYS immediately after school until 3:30 p.m. in the Main Office.  Student ID’s are required to pick up items.
