Family Resource Center

WMHS Mobile Food Pantry 2016-17

Family Resource Center

A Family Resource Center is a warm and welcoming place in the community where any family member of a WMHS student can go in times of need and as a regular part of day to day life as well.  A place where family members can meet, use computers, get information and support.

The FRC is an important part of our community schools’ initiative. It is founded on research showing that children succeed when adults work together to foster positive educational outcomes and schools work best when families and community stakeholders take active roles in the education of children.  We are located in the Main Building.

We invite you to be a part of your students' Family Resource Center.  We have a school-site team responsible for helping to sustain a shared vision for the West Mesa High School community.  We help align resources and tools that can help students to succeed at school and in life.  Building relationships among school staff, community partners and family members is one of our primary goals.

Programs include:

Family Involvement

Research by Ann Henderson and Dr. Karen Mapp* shows that improving parent and family engagement can have a real and dramatic impact on student achievement. In fact, students with involved families are more likely to:

  • Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs
  • Be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits
  • Attend school regularly
  • Have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school
  • Graduate and go on to postsecondary education
